How do you use headphones and earbuds with the PS5 and PS4 controller? If you play games at night but don’t have access to a fancy headset, there’s a way to output all PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 audio through traditional headphones and earbuds using the DualSense and DualShock 4. All you need is a pair of earphones with a 3.5mm jack, and you’re pretty much good to go. As part of our PS5 guide, we're going to explain how to use headphones with your PS5 and PS4 controllers.
How to Use Headphones and Earbuds with PS5 and PS4 Controller
To use headphones and earbuds with the PS5 and PS4 controller, simply follow the below steps:
Attach the Headphones or Earbuds
Connect any pair of headphones with a 3.5mm adapter into the slot on the bottom of the DualSense or DualShock 4 controller, located between the underside of the analogue sticks.
Setup Audio Output
If you don't hear any sound immediately, then take the following actions:
PS5
- Press the PlayStation button once to bring up the Control Centre.
- Select Sound > Output Device > Headset (Controller).
- This should output all audio through your headphones or earbuds. In order to check it's all working correctly, fire up a game and listen for sound coming through your headphones or earbuds.
PS4
- Hold the PlayStation button until the Quick Menu appears.
- Select Sound/Devices > Output to Headphones > All Audio.
- This should output all audio through your headphones or earbuds. However, you may want to test it by playing a game.
Adjust the Volume
To adjust the volume of your headphones and earbuds, navigate to the same menu on either the PS5 or PS4 by following the steps above. You'll see an option for Volume, allowing you to turn the sound up and down as required.

Do you know if it outputs the audio in stereo or mono?
@meischoice it's stereo or even surround if your headphones can do it
@charlesnarles Nice! Now I can use my PULSE ELITE EDITION headset!
Is it possible to put an aux cable between the controller and my speakerset?
Updated after four years!
Is it a slow day for articles?
@Cetafille Yes, I have been doing that since I got the PS4 a few months ago.
This isn't a new feature, don't understand why it's being talked about now?
"traditional iPod-esque headphones"
I'm pretty sure headphones pre-date iPods..
I never knew I could do this and I own monitor Sennheisers. Doh.
Anyone with headphones should already know that they can use them by plugging into the 3.5mm port.
Potato
Chicken Sandwich
Yeah, I kinda figured this out all by myself the second I booted my PS4 the first time. I'm smart that way.
No seriously, I never play without my headphones unless I'm just checking something out or using the store or whatevs.
Well, as a relatively old, clueless duffer, I didn't know how to do this - so you at least have my thanks, PushSquare.
Guys I need your help, the Output to headphones is grayed our however when I plug the headset it recognizes the microphone which works fine, anybody knows why this is happening? I tried 3 different headsets and it is doing the same for all
how is this coming up in current articles ?? Well , since it is.. your article is now incorrect . "All" audio does not work when using psvr.
A must for games like the division where the console blows to loud you can't hear the game.
What year is it lol? You mean to tell me... sigh.
R people really so dumb as to not know this alridy wow
@alexsirgo how are you plugging the headset into the system you can either use the controller headphone output which requires you to go to settings and switch all audio to headphones or if you're using a doggle you have to pair it with the PS4 I think I just plug mine straight into the controller headphone jack
Instructions unclear, got my PS4 stuck to the ceiling. Halp
Thanx for this article
I done mine last night. No lag. I used to do it via the TV Bluetooth but you had a small bit of lag. It's much better this way.
It would be good if you could use wireless ear buds - is there any work around to this?
Has anyone tried to connect bluetooth buds to the PS5 yet?
I found it weird and dumb that my logitech PC headphones that needed a donge worked just fineon PS4, but my anker buds didn't work at all.
@rockertherockgod use some that are recognised by your TV
@get2sammyb do you know if you can plug a USB-C headset into the controller for audio?
Had to use headphones with my PS4 to drown out the noise of the fan....
What I want to know is why is there only 1 USB port! I cannot charge the controller and the headset at the same time!!
Wait, so there are people who didn't know what a 3.5mm audio port on a controller was for? No JK, I spent days trying to find out a way to play my (ironically Sony) MX3's through Bluetooth and then figured out it was just easier to hard wire them into the controller. Sony's hardware wall on Bluetooth is... well, ridiculous. Especially considering their own brand is not supported.
@Oriion Look on the back of the console...
